After recent flooding and bad weather from storm Babet in October 2023, we hosted our first Big Derby cleanup event to tackle the subsequent plastic pollution in the River Derwent. We united with the University of Derby, Derby College, Impactoverse and local businesses for a major clean-up effort along the River Derwent and its banks.
More than 100 people showed up for support, including school pupils, students, and NHS staff.
Thanks to everyone's help, we made a real and impactful difference in our local community, pulling plastic litter, a dishwasher, sleeping bags and even an electric bike!

After a fantastic clean-up effort from our volunteers, we had an excellent selection of activities and celebrations outside of the Museum of Making in Derby City Centre to highlight the importance of environmental conservation. Among these were an upcycling workshop led by the renowned Max McMurdo from Channel 4’s “Amazing Spaces” and “Tool Club, a performance by X-Factor's All-Singing-All-Dancing Star and former member of Only Boys Aloud, Russell Jones, and a meet and greet with Team GB Olympic athlete, William Sharman.
We are so pleased with how many people came to support our event and the community, and we believe that with every cleanup, we are one step closer to tackling the plastic pollution crisis. Despite being inland, our efforts help prevent plastic from reaching the oceans as these rivers eventually flow to the North Sea, so no matter where you are in the country, it's essential to dispose of your rubbish correctly!
