An internet search of virtually any city or country in the world followed by the words “river rubbish” “lake rubbish” or “harbor rubbish” will produce an array of ugly images revealing a global problem. A problem that impacts the environment, the economy, and the quality of life in communities everywhere.
River pollution is having a profound impact on the world’s waterways as it travels downstream to the oceans where scientists are warning that its long term effects will be mass extinctions and ecosystem collapse. Every year, roughly 14 billion pounds of waste is swept out to our oceans via rivers and canals. The visual, public health, and economic impacts on the adjacent communities are substantial and is creating tremendous environmental problems.
Restoring the health of world’s waterways and addressing the accumulation of waste in its oceans is a massive challenge that we, Think Ocean, want to tackle from inside out or “from inland to oceans”.
The first prototype Waterwheel Powered Rubbish Interceptor was installed at the mouth of the Jones Falls in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in May of 2014. Since that time it has removed mote than 200 tons of trash and debris a year.
